ADHD Care Works Best With a Team — Not Just One Provider

Getting support for ADHD can feel overwhelming. With long waitlists, limited specialists, medication shortages, and rising mental health needs, many people find themselves trying to cope alone. But ADHD should never be a solo journey.

The reality is that ADHD affects every part of life — emotions, learning, work, routines, relationships, and physical health. Because of this, no single professional can meet all the needs of a person with ADHD.

The best care comes from a team working together.

The Gaps People Face

Many children, teens, and adults with ADHD experience:

long delays for diagnosis

limited access to psychologists or psychiatrists

confusion about treatment options

strain in school or work

relationship stress

lower confidence and self-esteem

misinformation from unreliable sources

These challenges can leave individuals and families feeling stuck or unsupported.

Why a Team Matters

ADHD is not just medical, it is emotional, behavioural, environmental, and often linked with other conditions such as anxiety, sleep issues, or learning differences.

A strong support network might include:

GPs for health screening and mental health plans

Pharmacists for medication support, routines, interactions, and health advice

Psychologists and counsellors for emotional and behavioural skills

Teachers and learning support for school adjustments

Allied health professionals (OTs, dietitians, ADHD coaches)

Family and community groups for everyday support

Each person plays a different role, and together they form a complete picture of care.

Building Local, Accessible Support

While we wait for broader system changes, local community care can make a huge difference.
This includes:

trained pharmacists offering ongoing ADHD support

GPs working closely with allied health teams

teachers and coaches understanding ADHD needs

professionals sharing information (with consent)

patients knowing where to seek reliable help

When everyone works together, people with ADHD feel understood, supported, and less overwhelmed.

You Don’t Need to Do This Alone

ADHD care isn’t “one appointment and done.” It evolves as life changes, and having a team behind you helps make that journey easier and far more effective.

If you or your child are navigating ADHD, reach out to your local healthcare and community supports such as your GP, pharmacist, psychologist, teacher, or allied health provider. Each one plays an important role, and together they can help you build a clear, confident, and connected path forward.

Recognising Grief in Women Diagnosed With ADHD Later in Life

For many women, receiving an ADHD diagnosis later in life can feel like a huge moment of clarity where finally, things make sense. But alongside that relief, another powerful emotion often appears:

Grief.

And if you’re feeling this, please know:
You’re not alone, you’re not overreacting, and there is nothing wrong with you.

Late-diagnosed women with ADHD often walk a long, emotional path, not because ADHD defines them but because understanding comes years (or decades) after the struggles began.

Why So Many Women Are Diagnosed Later in Life

ADHD often looks different in women. Instead of the “stereotypical hyperactive boy,” many women may present with:

internalised anxiety

perfectionism

chronic overwhelm

sensory sensitivity

burnout

emotional load from carrying everyone else’s needs

For years, society has misunderstood ADHD in women.
And because of that, many went undiagnosed even when they were struggling.

Recent data in Australia shows that women now make up over half of newly treated adult ADHD cases. This shows how many women were previously missed, dismissed, or misunderstood.

The Grief Behind a Late Diagnosis

A diagnosis explains years of confusion but it also brings a flood of “What if I had known earlier?”

Many women grieve:

• Lost opportunities

Careers, passions, study paths, or goals that could have unfolded differently.

• Struggles in relationships

Feeling “too much,” misunderstood, or blamed for behaviours that were ADHD all along.

• Emotional exhaustion and burnout

Years spent trying harder than everyone else without understanding why life felt heavier.

• The impact on motherhood or family life

Guilt about not being the mother, partner or daughter they desperately wanted to be.

• Being labelled unfairly

“Lazy,” “messy,” “hopeless,” “too emotional,” “scattered.”

These labels sink deep. And for many, a diagnosis finally reveals:
It was never a character flaw. It was ADHD.

Of course that brings relief but it brings sadness too.

If This Is You, You’re Not Alone

Many women describe the moment of diagnosis as both a breath of fresh air and a heavy weight lifting and landing at the same time

You may feel:

anger

sadness

confusion

relief

empowerment

frustration

hope

grief

These emotions are all valid.
They are part of processing your story, not signs of weakness.

What Can Help You Move Forward

Here are gentle, supportive steps that many women find helpful after a late ADHD diagnosis:

1. Give Yourself Permission to Feel

You’ve carried a lot, probably in silence.
Grief means you’re finally understanding your past with compassion.

2. Talk to Someone You Trust

A supportive doctor, psychologist, ADHD coach, pharmacist, friend, or partner can help you unpack your emotions.

3. Learn About ADHD in Women

Education brings clarity. Learn what options you have to manage ADHD and speak to your healthcare professional especially about medications and impact on health. Understanding how hormones, masking, perfectionism, and sensory overload affect ADHD can bring deep healing.

4. Connect With Others Who Get It

You’re not the only one walking this journey.
There are wonderful support groups such as:

ADHD Australia

ADHD Foundation Australia

ADHD support communities and online groups

Beyond Blue (for emotional support)

Knowing you’re not alone can be profoundly comforting.

5. Explore Mindfulness and Regulation Tools

Things like walking, breathing exercises, journaling, music, yoga, or meditation can help calm the nervous system and reduce overwhelm.

6. Look After Co-existing Conditions

Sleep issues, peri-menopause, anxiety, or chronic stress can make ADHD symptoms worse. Addressing these can bring meaningful improvement.

7. Remember: Medication is Just One Part

ADHD is not fixed in a single appointment.
Medication can help enormously but emotional support, lifestyle adjustments, and ongoing care matter just as much.

You Deserve Support, Healing, and Understanding

If you are a woman diagnosed with ADHD later in life, please know:

What you’re feeling is real.

Your emotions are valid.

Nothing was “wrong” with you.

You were doing your best without the information you needed.

And it is never too late to heal, grow, and thrive.

Your diagnosis is not the end of your story and it’s the beginning of understanding yourself with compassion.

And you don’t have to figure this out alone.
Healthcare professionals, including pharmacists trained in ADHD care, can walk with you as you navigate your journey forward.

A Helpful Guide for Patients and Parents

If you’ve been taking ADHD medication and suddenly feel like it’s not working the way it used to, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common concerns among people with ADHD and parents supporting their children.

It can feel frustrating, worrying, or confusing, especially when the medication was helping before.

The reassuring news? ADHD medication rarely “just stops working.”
Most of the time, something in your routine, health, environment, or lifestyle has changed and those changes can influence how your medication performs.

The most common reasons why this happens and what steps you can take next.

1. Your Dose May Need Adjusting

As life changes, your ADHD support needs may change too.
The dose that once worked might now be:

too low

too high

wearing off too early

Factors like puberty, increased school or work demands, stress, growth, or daily routine changes can all impact how much support your brain needs.

What to do:

Speak with your GP, paediatrician, or pharmacist about what you’re noticing. A dose review may help.

2. Changes in Routine or Missed Doses

ADHD medication works best when taken consistently. Even small changes like waking up later, forgetting doses or shifting your morning routine can make it feel less effective.

What to do:

Try reminders, morning checklists, medication organisers, ADHD-friendly routine, task stacking etc. Have a chat to your pharmacist and ADHD peers for ideas.

3. New Medications, Vitamins, or Herbal Products

Even simple things like new supplements or over-the-counter medications can interfere with ADHD medication or worsen side effects. Remember, not every ADHD medication is a stimulant.

This may include:

cold and flu tablets

herbal supplements

antidepressants

Fruit juices or ascorbic acid

What to do:

Tell your pharmacist about everything you’re taking, even vitamins or herbal products.

4. Sleep Changes

Poor sleep is one of the biggest reasons ADHD symptoms worsen, even when medication hasn’t changed.

Too little (or poor quality) sleep can increase:

inattention

impulsivity

irritability

emotional sensitivity

forgetfulness

difficulty starting tasks

What to do:

Look at your sleep habits – screen time, bedtime routine, caffeine, stress, or other health issues that may be impacting your rest.

5. Hormonal Changes

Hormones have a major impact on dopamine, the main chemical ADHD medications support.

Many women notice their medication feels weaker:

before their period

during peri-menopause

post-pregnancy

during high-progesterone phases

Lower oestrogen and fluctuating progesterone can worsen ADHD symptoms.

What to do:

Track your ADHD symptoms alongside your menstrual cycle. This helps tailor your treatment and speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

6. Nutritional Deficiencies

Low levels of certain nutrients can worsen ADHD symptoms and affect how medication feels. Common deficiencies include:

iron

vitamin B12

zinc

magnesium

omega-3 fatty acids

What to do:

Ask your GP about a blood test. Correcting deficiencies can make a noticeable difference.

7. Stress and Life Pressure

Stress affects your ability to regulate attention and emotions.
High stress raises cortisol, making you feel more:

overwhelmed

emotional

forgetful

irritable

tired

wired at night

These symptoms can make it seem like your medication isn’t strong enough but stress may be the underlying cause.

What to do:
Acknowledge what’s happening in your life. Stress management strategies can support both symptom control and medication effectiveness.

8. Co-Existing Conditions

Many people with ADHD also experience:

anxiety

depression

sleep disorders

asthma

hayfever

learning differences

sensory challenges

When these flare up, ADHD symptoms often flare too, even on medication.

What to do:
Managing these conditions well often improves how your ADHD medication works.

9. Environmental or Lifestyle Changes

ADHD brains are sensitive to routine and surroundings.
Medication may feel less effective if you’ve recently:

changed jobs

moved house

started a new school

experienced sensory overwhelm

had a big shift in routine

faced major life transitions

What to do:
Small accommodations or changes in your environment can help ease the load.
